Aparupa Sengupta, PhD, MS, RBP
Dr. Sengupta received her Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Biotechnology and Microbiology from Bangalore University, India. She worked as a Research Assistant in an Indian Council of Medical Research Lab in the field of Immunology and Microbiology in India before coming to the US in 2008 for her graduate studies. She completed her second Master of Science in Plant Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology (specializing in Biofuel research) in 2009 and a doctorate in Biological Sciences (specializing in Environmental Microbiology and Applied Plant Biochemistry) in 2014 , from Michigan Technological University, Houghton, Michigan. During her PhD studies in summer 2011, she worked as a Scientist Intern in the Environmental Microbiology Lab of US Army Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg, Mississippi in the field of Biodiesel production. She has worked in the field of Biosafety and Biosecurity since December 2013; First, as a Lab safety Scientist and Responsible Conduct of Research Instructor at her alma mater (Michigan Tech) then at Rutgers University as a Biosafety Officer, before joining University of California-Merced as their Biological Safety Program Manager in May 2018. Dr. Sengupta is an active member of ABSA International, she has taught pre-conference courses in the field of gene editing and other emerging technologies, their biosafety and biosecurity risks and best management practices. She has given multiple peer-review and invited talks in the US and internationally advocating the safe and secure use of emerging recombinant technologies in the evolving field of biosciences. Her technical expertise is in the field of: Microbiology, Molecular Genetics-Recombinant DNA Technology, and Plant Biotechnology.
