James Carney, PhD
Jim Carney is the manager of the Bioenergy and Defense Technologies department at Sandia National Laboratories. He works with a group focused on developing strategies for producing biofuels and high value chemicals at scale as well as defining host-pathogen interactions. In addition to a deep background in molecular biology and protein structure he has a distinct interest in understanding the effect of technological innovation on national security. He has previously worked at the US Army Edgewood Chemical and Biological Center as Branch Chief of Biochemistry and on the faculty in the Radiation Oncology Department at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He received his Ph.D in Biochemistry from Loyola University Medical School and carried out postdoctoral work at the University of California Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
